SHANKLAND, M. BISSEN, S. T., and WEISBLAT, D. A. 1992. Description of the Californian leech Helobdella robusta sp. nov., and comparison with Helobdella triserialis on the basis of morphology, embryology, and experimental breeding. Can. J. Zool. 70: 1258 1263. This paper describes the leech Helobdella robusta, which was collected from the Sacramento delta of California. This new species is generally similar to another species found in California, Helobdella triserialis, and the two were compared in detail. In the adult, we observed reliable differences in the relative dimensions of the body, the size of the dorsal papillae, the pattern of cutaneous pigmentation, and the structure of the gut. In the embryo, we observed differences in the appearance of the yolk platelets and the size of the adhesive gland. We also observed differences in the rate of embryonic development. All of these differences persist in breeding populations that have been maintained in the laboratory over many generations. Experimental studies indicate that H. robusta and H. triserialis have little or no proclivity for interbreeding, supporting their distinction as separate species.

Lessons from leeches: a call for DNA barcoding in the lab.
Many evolution of development labs study organisms that must be periodically collected from the wild. Whenever this is the case, there is the risk that different field collections will recover genetically different strains or cryptic species. Ignoring this potential for genetic variation may introduce an uncontrolled source of experimental variability, leading to confusion or misinterpretation ...
متن کاملDescription of a new leech species of Helobdella (Clitellata: Glossiphoniidae) from Mexico with a review of Mexican congeners and a taxonomic key.
To date, six species of the leech genus Helobdella have been recorded from Mexico: Helobdella atli, Helobdella elongata, Helobdella octatestisaca, Helobdella socimulcensis, Helobdella virginiae and Helobdella temiscoensis n. sp. This new species is characterized by a lanceolate body, the presence of a nuchal scute, uniform brown pigment on both dorsal and ventral surfaces, the absence of papill...
متن کاملDEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY 151,225-241 (1992) Expression of a Writ Gene in Embryonic Epithelium of the Leech
A new member of the Writ class of cell-cell communication molecules was identified in the leech Helobdella triserialis, on the basis of a conserved 86 amino acid coding sequence and exon structure. This gene, htr-wnt-A, is not an obvious homolog of any one of the previously described wnt class proteins. The embryonic expression of htr-w&A has been characterized at the cellular level, using nonr...
متن کاملMicromere lineages in the glossiphoniid leech Helobdella.
In leech embryos, segmental mesoderm and ectoderm arise from teloblasts by lineages that are already relatively well characterized. Here, we present data concerning the early divisions and the definitive fate maps of the micromeres, a group of 25 small cells that arise during the modified spiral cleavage in leech (Helobdella robusta) and contribute to most of the nonsegmental tissues of the adu...
متن کاملEctodermal interactions during neurogenesis in the glossiphoniid leech Helobdella triserialis.
Morphogenetic cell interactions during development were studied by combining cell ablation and cell lineage tracing techniques in embryos of the leech Helobdella triserialis. Ablation of an identified ectodermal teloblast, or teloblast precursor blastomere, on one side of an early embryo was often found to result in the later abnormal migration of the progeny cells of the corresponding contrala...
